Article Four MEDIATION: ONE OPTION OF SUCCESSFULLY MANAGING CONFLICT IN THE WORKPLACE
Following on from last weeks article on conflict in the workplace, this week we are exploring mediation as an effective option when used in the workplace to address conflict between employees.
Mediation is a process that attempts to bring about a peaceful settlement or compromise between hostile parties and to help them move towards a resolution.
The Mediator is a neutral party who facilitates this process through an objective position. The role of mediator may be formally appointed or informally assumed.
As a neutral and independent party to a problem situation, the person assuming the role of mediator is not usually directly involved. Their only involvement should be in their attempts to assist the employees who are experiencing conflict to find a way forward; that will enable both parties to accept a solution or compromise that satisfies them both.
i.e. they must not be seen to "take sides"
